First Day of School, hurricanes and other details....
Harry is now a 2nd grader and seems to have had a good first day at school. It was the first year that we had supplies to buy and it turns out the list wasn't actually sent on purpose. Oh well, all the things are things we will use eventually. Harry headed off in a new baseball cap with a new backpack. Back to school outfits are sort of a non issue in our house of boys. There were a bunch of new families at the bus stop. Most of them are war college families here for a year or so. Two of the children are second graders like Harry. It seems like the bus may be coming a bit later than last year, so that may be a good thing for our non morning person son.
Really, it ran like the past couple of years. Harry was up early and excited and didn't really want to eat. I made pancakes from scratch since I was out of Bisquick and of course Harry wasn't happy with them. Oh well, at least I tried. He got on the bus happily and never looked back. When I picked him up he zoomed right by me and I had to call him back to ask about his day, which elicited something like a "not in the mood to share right now" so we just had a companionable walk home and I will hopefully hear about things as the days go by.
Robert was very sad to see Harry go and wanted to get on the bus with him this morning. It was kind of a hard day for him. He is not a child who cries much and I can think of 3 or 4 occasions of genuine upset crying today. He cheered up after Harry left and we went and did things together all morning and then Grampy and "Weezie" came for a visit so that makes all things lovely, but he definitely needed somebody nearby all day today. He also scared the living daylights out of Kevin and I this evening. He got away from Kevin downtown as we were throwing out the cups our celebratory first day of school ice cream came in and went sprinting into and across the street! He thought it was great, "I run very fast" he said and we said "Bad boy, that was not a good thing to do, bad boy" It can be so terrifying sometimes to be responsible for these curious, busy, fast children!
So the first day of school was also inundated with weather worries. There is a hurricane coming up the coast and we are on the edge of its path. Right now it looks like we will be getting tropical storm strength winds. We are battening down the hatches. Fortunately we are on the edge of the path, but if it hits Rhode Island it looks like it will hit Jamestown. The children are having a half day of school tomorrow - the first bits of storm being expected to hit in the early afternoon. Such excitement is something that I enjoyed more when I was younger and not in charge of a household. So we say a few extra prayers for safety and then we go down and watch the boats get pulled out of the water (there are thousands in the waters around Jamestown) and maybe go watch the waves at Beavertail before the storm hits. It can be an excuse to play around with my camera.
