the tyrannical twos

Can you guess what word is coming out of that mouth - it is his "ornery" look and most likely he's saying "no"

As I mentally prepare myself for Harry to go back to school, I wonder about what life will be like at home with Robert.  He is a different little person than he was way back in June.  He is a joy and a delight, but I have learned some new things about him.  Sibling rivalry goes both ways.  He isn't shy about demanding my attention when he feels that I have paid or am paying too much attention to his big brother.  His vocal skills have developed in leaps and bounds over the summer, but I need to sometimes remind myself that he is still just 2.  He may be able to speak in compound sentences and remember songs and even make up imaginary play, but he still melts down in the typical toddler fashion when life is too overwhelming.

Yesterday as a treat I took the boys to the dreaded (only for me) Toys R Us.  Harry has been accumulating allowance and wanted to spend it.  Robert was along for the ride, although I figured I would get him something little.  He lasted well there and we all came away happily and then headed for a stop at the grocery store.  We needed some basics or I would have skipped it.  About halfway through the store, Robert lost his mind and screamed the rest of the way until we were in the car and I got the "Pwincess and the Frog" on the car stereo.    Harry's comment was that it was the worst trip to the grocery store ever - I'm not sure about that, but I didn't quite finish my list.

Robert hasn't napped much this week and that is not a huge issue, but he is a bit more ornery in the afternoons if he hasn't napped.  Hopefully we will get back to napping.  I would love to nap in the afternoons, it is so hot, but I suspect it is the heat that is keeping him up!

Oh well, we'll go off to the beach again this afternoon  after naptime and enjoy our last afternoon of freedom together before school starts!

a more benign picture of my little boy - just exploring steps and stopping for a smile and break :-)
